Held this year on November 5, the Loi Krathong festival sees most of the population head to canals, streams or rivers like the Ping or Chao Phraya to bless this element so central to their culture, and to seek forgiveness for using and polluting it in the process. Thais say this thank you with flowers. Only we don’t present bunches or even garlands; we fit the plants architecturally into krathong — elaborate natural rafts that they construct from materials found in the traditional Thai garden or field. Most urbanites, however, buy ready-made krathong from pierside stalls.

What is a Krathong?

Unlike offerings to altar, vehicle or shrine, a krathong needs to loi (float), so they’re made of nature’s Styrofoam: slices of yuak gluay (banana trunk). Environmentalists and traditionalists have fought recent attempts to substitute plastic Styrofoam, and have largely kept the festivities green. In a contemporary compromise, inventive souls now bake multi-colour dyed bread krathong to subsequently feed the fish and turtles, though the crust makes it hard to pierce with pins or flower stems. Two-inch slices of yuak kluay provide better buoyancy and fibrousness for attaching the decoration, which is suffused with auspicious meaning. This miniature vessel embodies many levels of Thai arts and beliefs, helping to keep the craft skills alive.

Leaf origami

This time of year, the country’s banana trees get shorn of their most pristine leaves (bai tong). Over a meter long, they are de-spined and spliced into square sections suitable for cutting out to wrap the float and to fold into shapes derived from lai thai — the intricate patterns that form a symbolic language seen throughout temples, palaces and traditional arts.Around the edge, nimble fingers are required to pleat blades of tang maprao (coconut leaves) into boxy geometric protrusions that come to resemble an open lotus pad. Bamboo pins keep the origami under tension in case it springs undone.

On top rises a lotus bud shaped spire built of bai tong. At its core, a chedi (stupa) shaped cone of leaf typically contains cooked sticky rice. The rice not only symbolises a staple derived from aquaculture, but its broad-based weight steadies the raft and its glutenous mass secures the myriad pins attaching the pointed side decorations. Called jeeb krathong (splayed leaves), the decorations evoke the jeeb finger gesture intrinsic to Thai dance. Dok bua (lotus buds) are most prevalent, along with yellow dao reuang (chrysanthmum), red dok kulaab (rose) and baan mai rue roy (globe amaranth), a bristly, non-wilting bloom that comes in white or purple. With a huge hole ripped through her belly the ship went down in less than an hour and provided the Phuket Diving community, at long last, with her own artificial reef. At 25 meters you'll find the engine room and car desk. Moving up to 18 meters you'll find the passenger section which has the heads, bar and lots of tables and chairs. Even though the ceiling is pretty low it is relatively safe to penetrate as the doors are broken off. At 15 meters you'll find the captain's cabin and wheel house. The reef is teeming with life and its proximity to Shark Point and Anemone Reef has undoubtedly had a lot to do with it's rapid population growth. The Wreck is an extremely popular dive and considered one of the best in location.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535880122527316928.post-51842626012396551442008-04-05T18:31:00.007+07:002008-04-05T18:45:40.866+07:00Koh Samet

Koh Samet, located in the Phe District of Rayong, is known as an Island Paradise of Thailand. The island offers a tranquil atmosphere combining with the white sandy beaches and crystalline clear sea-water.Traveling to Koh Samed is easy. It takes about 2 hours and a half to drive from Bangkok (about 175 kilometers) and only 1 hour from the popular beach resort of Pattaya. The travelers have to travel to Ban Phe, a port near Rayong Town, in order to catch the boat or ferry. The boat rides takes about 30 minutes. The most popular pier is locally called "Na Dan" which evolves into a small village - generally known as Koh Samet Village. It is the closest point from Ban Phe, so no doubt it is most popular. Other piers are also available on the island such as that on Vongduern and Ao Prao Beach.
At "Na Dan", there are several pick-up trucks, ready to transport visitors to the different beaches on the Island. The cost varies depending upon the beach that you would like to go since the distance counts. Although the vehicles look very basic, the truck operators here are more or less well organized with the pricelist clearly posted at "Na Dan". You may complain to the authority if you were ripped off; but this is unlikely to occur.

The closest beach from "Na Dan" is Haat Sai Kaew or Saikaew Beach which is about a kilometer away. (Meaning: Haat = Beach; Sai = Sand and Kaew = Crystal). As the name suggests, Sai Kaew means crystalline sand as the beach is shiny, glittering with white sand. Moreover, the sea water is very clear and warm. Haat Sai Kaew is the longest beach on the island. Travelers can hop over from one beach to the next either by foot or by the pick-up trucks that run around the island. These beaches are namely:- Sai Kaew Beach, Ao Phai, Ao Vong Duern, Ao Wai, Ao Kui Na Nok, Ao Kui Na Nai, Cape Khut, Ao Toei, and Ao Prao. There is a small unpaved road connecting these beaches in the above order.

Accommodation:-On the island, there are many small hotels and guesthouses with basic standard. Some guesthouses on less popular beaches provide only the lodging. It is ONLY lodging with a cushion, a pillow, a mosquito net and perhaps a blanket. That's all, nothing else - not even electricity nor water supply.

The guests have to purchase their own water charged per tub for toilet or bath. Many hotels do provide electricity, but only partially, not 24 hours as the electricity can be off at midnight. Lantern is perhaps the only choice. For those who prefer comforts, you should check with your hotel or your agent if the electricity is supplied 24 hours a day as well as the water supply. This is due to the fact that the resources on Koh Samed is limited. Although it is only 30 minutes away from the mainland, every supply on the island, except fish, has to be imported.

You can reach these places via the island's 'road' - a rising, falling, winding, red dirt calamity that songthaews manage to navigate. So obviously it's much more fun to walk along the beach and clamber up and down the rocky shoreline, making periodic swim-and-drink pitstops. The island's fisherman may think you're nuts, but don't let that deter you.

The further south you go the more local the guesthouses and resorts become, however, I saw contented-looking farang at most of the places I wandered past.Ao Pai, near the northern end of the island, retains the most spacious ratio of flesh to sand, given the number of places to stay here -good quality guesthouses like Tok's Little Hut and the popular Naga Guesthouse, with prices starting in the Bt300 range. Many restaurants and bars to choose from also (most of which have guesthouse extensions) including Jep's, which serves up cheap food in plentiful amounts. Ao Phai Hut, however, is on the costlier end of the spectrum, with bungalows beginning at Bt500.

Ao Pudsa and Ao Tubtim, a couple of beaches south of Ao Phai, are also relatively uncrowded and have a smattering of places to choose from. Friendly looking Tubtim Guesthouse has rooms starting at Bt500 that include a bath. Further down is Ao Lung Wang and Ao Cho, and here you're already in more deserted country where your beach buddies are more likely to be Bangkok weekenders rather than drunken Brits. Consider that a ringing endorsement. Wonder Land Bungalow has huts starting at Bt200 and bungalows from Bt400-800. Tarn Jawan, snuggled up beside a fairly empty and appealing stretch of beach, has bungalows starting at Bt800.

The next big enclave is Ao Wongduan, a fine place to watch farang fat fry in the sun. This is a major, crowded spot, in which clusters of umbrellas line the long stretch of sand. Wongduan is a more resort-like area, with places like Malibu Garden Resort charging Bt950 for a standard room (though cheaper places can be found) and vacationing Western families frolicking on the beach. Stumble past it, and more idyllic beach experiences await.

When you reach the Ao Tien area you're liable to be surrounded by guitar-playing groups of Thais roughing it in tents on the beach. It's tempting as hell to crash out here in a more secluded area with equally pristine beaches. Candle Light Resort has bungalows in the Bt800 range. Ao Lungdam, a little further down, is also more local and smaller, with places to stay from Bt300 and up.If you've gotten this far south on Samet you'll be wondering how to get back to the action on the north end before the sun goes down. Hit the road and a songthaew may eventually roll past; if its full and you can hitch a ride for Bt20 you've done well.Hat Saikaew, the northernmost beach, is a great place to wander around when the lights go out on Samet. There are endless restaurants, bars, and pubs, many perched at the edge of the water. Beer is cheap, so now's the time to punish your liver.

Candlelit tables and creatively concocted seats on the sand adorn this strip, and once you sit down you may never want to get up again. Watching the far off narcotic glow of twirling, flaming batons, listening to the roar of the sea and cozying up to Samet's friendly native mascots (differing species of cuddly sand-dogs), you may find yourself thinking hard to find a reason to leave. One of the better hotels in Hat Saikaew and bookable over the internet is Sai Kaew Beach Resort

A recently constructed reservoir has improved the availability of fresh water on Koh Samet, Thailand, which was an enduring problem on the hot and dry island where the rainy season is limited to the May to July period. On the other side of the island from Hat Saikaew and past the reservoir is Ao Prao beach, this houses the more up market hotels on the island, the shady beach bar at Ao Prao Resort the is a great place to while away a lazy afternoon, worth the extra cost if you want something a bit more up market. Ao Prao also boasts the most expensive hotel on the island Le Vimarn Cottages Hotel, it has a swimming pool, never seen anyone actually use it as the beach and water are great for swimming. Splash out on a massage on a comfortable table under the shady palms on the beach, you know it makes sense.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535880122527316928.post-71284841311658367252008-04-05T18:05:00.005+07:002008-04-05T18:21:05.385+07:00Koh Tao
Koh Tao, little more than 21 km², is located about 70 km east of the coastline between Suratthani and Chumphon, in the Gulf of Thailand.

Koh Tao means Turtle Island, because in the past the waters in the area had been rich with sea turtles, nowadays they have mostly moved on to other breeding grounds.

Initially the island was not inhabited, there was only the occasional fisherman from the neighboring islands, looking for shelter in a storm or just taking a break before continuing his tiresome journey

On June 18, 1899, His Majesty the King Chulalongkorn (Rama V 1868-1910) visited Koh Tao and left as evidence his monogram on a huge boulder at Jor Por Ror Bay next to Sairee Beach. But not for long.

In the same year Khun Ueam and his twin brother Khun Oh reached Koh Tao from the neighboring Koh Phangan by trying out their traditional sail boat, for that time a quite long and dangerous journey.

Even though the island was still under royal patronage, it didn’t stop these pioneers claiming themselves a good piece of land on today's Sairee Beach. Having brought their families over, they began to cultivate and harvest the excellent soil.

The first generation of today's community had settled! They lived a very simple and tough life harvesting coconuts, fishing and growing vegetables, which were also traded with Koh Phangan. Despite the difficulties in reaching the island, the population then grew steadily.

In the eighties the first travelers discovered the island paradise and their special "backpacker-network" quickly made it widely known and a popular destination. As a consequence, bigger, faster and safer boats were used to allow easier access to Koh Tao.

During the past ten years the reputation of Turtle Island's natural beauty, especially its marine life and coral reefs, spread the world over and the number of paradise seekers increased rapidly.
It soon became one of the major dive sites in Thailand, attracting beginners and professionals alike. The local businesses expanded immediately to catch up with the needs of the new clientele. The island today, though still remaining an absolute paradise, caters for all tastes and budgets.

If you are interested in more historical details and stories about the Turtle, go to visit Khun Orawan at Seashell Resort, Sairee. The largest of 47 islands off the coast of Trat province, its seeming inaccessibility means that the island has been largely overlooked by visitors, making it a true island get- away. However, an excellent road from Bangkok and a short flight from Bangkok to Trat airport, have meant that the destination is now starting to get the attention that it deserves.

Koh Chang has always been a favourite get-away for Thai people. Lush and mountainous, this quiet island, full of natural treasures, is a jewel just waiting to be discovered.

Charmingly Simple
Largely untouched, Koh Chang is an unsophisticated island which remains unaffected by the modern world. The original inhabitants of Koh Chang (Khon Kard) still live traditionally, surviving mainly from an income of fishing, supplemented by growing fruit and rubber. There are still fishing communities on the island where rain or shine the fisherman take the boats out. At night you can see the lights on the horizon from the fishing boats catching squid.

Chao Po Koh Chang (the Godfather of Koh Chang)
This Chinese style shrine in the north of the island, with two huge elephants guarding the entrance, has been a saviour to the Khon Kard for generations. Throughout the history of the island, when the fishermen found themselves facing a strong monsoon or a poor harvest, they would seek guidance from the Chao Po Koh Chang. Island folklore records amazing stories of answered prayers when people have asked for help at the shrine.

Local History and Traditions
An important part of the island's history took place at the Naval Battle Ground (Boriwaen Yutthanavee). It is one of the major centers of tourism in Thailand, with several million of visitors visit here for each year. Tourists visit Pattaya for many reasons including luxury hotels, beautiful beaches, attraction activities, friendly people, shopping, reasonable living cost, and a wide variety of nearby tourist attractions. Others come for the world renowned nightlife.Pattaya BeachesThailand has some of the world's most beautiful beaches, Pattaya Beach is situated along the central city in close proximity to shopping, hotels and bars. The over-abundance of jet-skis and speedboats has contributed to the pollution of the water along Pattaya Beach, as has the sewage outlet at the end of the pier. The section of beach from Central Road (Pattaya Klang พัทยากลาง) south to the harbor is adjacent to the core of Pattaya's abundant nightlife area, hence it is less family-oriented than the North Pattaya and Jomtien beaches. Most sections of the beach are covered by rented deckchairs run by local beverage vendors during daylight hours so finding an available spot of sand is rather difficult and also unadvisable due to the poor condition of the beach. Visitors are advised to avoid the beach after dark. Although the Beach Road itself is busy and brightly lit, some criminal elements find the unlit beach useful as a cover for their activities. The local police have started to target this area in various ongoing clampdowns.
Jomtien BeachJomtien Beach is divided from the main part of Pattaya by Pratumnak Hill, just south of the city. In contrast to Pattaya Beach, Jomtien is a popular spot for family vacationers and watersports enthusiasts. Jomtien is essentially a residential area with beachside hotels, bungalow complexes, condominiums and restaurants. A wide array of watersport activities can be found, including jet-skis, para-sailing and scuba diving. Dongtan beach, in Jomtien, is known as the gay beach, and is busy every day of the year.Jomtien's most visible landmark is the 56-story Pattaya Park tower, part of the Pattaya Park entertainment complex which also features a water park, roller coaster, monorail and children's activities.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535880122527316928.post-13716053114650196932008-02-27T18:56:00.001+07:002008-04-05T18:27:59.735+07:00Phuket : The biggest island in Thailand

One of the most popular tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the centralwestern coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket’s night-life and its cheap shopping are located in Patong, andthe area has become increasingly developed. Patong means “the forest filledwith banana leaves” in Thai.

Patong Beach, Phuket this is Phuket’s central tourist and night time entertainment district.

Over the year, Patong has turned from a fishing village into one of the island’stwo cities. The famous bay and 4 km. beach remain as they were, with developmentlimited to the area back of the beach road.

There, however, virtually every kind of entertainment imaginable awaits visitors, with bars catering to every nationality. Live music can be found in many places, and there are also discotheques.

Accommodations range from budget to five-star. Shopping opportunities appearto be endless. Whatever one’s culinary disposition, a restaurant catering toit will be found. In addition, there are many tour companies waiting to helpvisitors plan their vacations.

These are reasons why we chose Phuket (Patong) for our holiday. Let’s go!!!!
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Starting from Suwannabumi Airport Bangkok and flying with Thai Air Asia ittook around 90 minutes to reach Phuket Airport, after the smooth flight it tookaround 30 minutes from Phuket Airport to our hotel, which was Club Andaman Resorton Patong Beach. The Hotel is quite nice consisting of a variety of rooms fromStandard, Deluxe Balcony to Junior Suite. It also boasts 2 Swimming pools, agymnasium with a Table Tennis table and a Pool table.

We had a Balcony Deluxe and the room was impressive.

Around 19.00 pm., we walked along Patong beach road to the night market andbars. While I was walking, I saw souvenir shops, clothes shops, restaurants. Now I understand why many tourists come to Phuket and especially Patong. Youcan see from the picture below.

If you bring your own mator sit on the sand it’s FREE)
If you love to do activities, I recommend Parachuting, Banana Boat or Jet Skiall reasonably charged.

Early start today as we are going on a boat trip, I’m so excited!

We opted for the 3 Island Trip which takes us to Phi Phi Don, Khai Island (EggIsland) and Phi Phi Lay. I bought the tickets for the trip close to the Hotel.Along the Beach road, there are lots of counters selling trips to the Islandsaround Phuket. This trip cost me only 1000 Baht net including transfer.

The driver collected us at 8.30 am from the Hotel, and then we made the tripacross Phuket Island to the Ferry Terminal. Our speedboat had 6 engines andseated around 70 passengers.

The first Island we stopped at was Khai Island. In just 3 minutes you can walkacross the entire island, it’s so small but very beautiful.

We spent around 30 minutes on the Island, then our next port of call was MonkeyBeach. Oh My Monkey!!!!!! There are lots monkeys on the beach, waiting to befed, and if you don’t feed them, they’ll steal your food.
The monkeys are quite friendly, but remember they are wild animals so don’tget too close.

If you don’t like monkeys you can go swimming or snorkeling. I recommend yougo snorkeling because the water is so clear. We took some bread to feed thefish so we had a good view.

For budget travelers, several buses depart daily from Ekkamai bus terminal through the day. In addition, there are local “Song Taew” or local transport services connecting Chonburi – Nong Mon Market – Bang Sean. A wide range of hotels and bungalows are located by the sea and bicycles for rent are available in shops nearby. Weekends are always particularly crowded. The weather there is very nice in February. The Giant Swing was first built in 1784, two years after the foundation of Rattanakosin City. (2004 A.D.), the pillars were found to be seriously eroded to the point of being beyond repair.
This in turn, prompted the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to orchestrated the reconstruction of the Giant Swing with the consent of the Department of Fine Arts, Ministry of Culture, and the cooperation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in finding appropriate golden teak wood pillars from Den Chai District, Phrae Province, as replacement.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration finished the reconstruction and held the sacrifice ceremony for the new Giant Swing on Sunday 24 December 2549 (2006 A.D.)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Across the street along Thanon Dinso (Dinso Road), we went to Devasathan Temple (Brahman Temple). Tourists can sis down in the open field full of golden bamboo leaves. The aerial photography shows the hill that looks like glass slippers. Phra Sang’s Pond is a deep abysse believed to be the place where Phra Sang soaks in gold water to camouflage himself from his stepmother Phanturat. The cliff overlooks the houses of villagers and Cha Am beach. Kho Chang, the next stop, is actually a limestone walking path that looks like the Great Wall in China, Ma Yom Cave is full of stalagmite and exotic plants as well as a giant boa tree. It is a place where bats gather so villagers com and take bats’ waste to sell it in the market.

After walking down from Ma Yom Cave, tourists can enjoy a view of wild life including a hog deer and exotic birds. The story of Phra Sang Thong plays a major part in bonding the local to this historical heritage.
